Position Summary

We are seeking a Lab Manager to direct and manage day-to-day laboratory operations including workflow, personnel, equipment, supplies, and documentation needed to ensure the lab runs smoothly and maintains compliance with applicable laws and policies. The ideal candidate will be responsible for implementing processes and procedures to assure quality management of the laboratory and ensure that daily goals are met by laboratory personnel. The Lab Manager will work closely with procurement for lab supplies. This position reports to the Director of Facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages laboratory operations with a focus on ensuring efficient lab infrastructure services and support, and identification of continuous improvement opportunities.
  • In collaboration with laboratory and vivarium staff, lead cross-functional decision-making regarding lab supplies, lab space planning, equipment utilization, and waste stream. Ensuring effective management of stockroom supplies, coordinating chemical inventory, and ordering within EH&S and procurement constraints and procedures.
  • Interprets company lab policies to ensure consistency across the workforce.
  • Implement and enforce laboratory safety policies to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Facilitate lab coordination, information sharing, and safety meetings, facilitating lab inspections by internal and external authorities ensuring successful outcome.
  • Consider cost improvement and reduction where feasible.
  • Ensure all pertinent lab equipment is onboarded, commissioned, and ensure all lab equipment is properly maintained and in functional order at all times.
  • Efficient performance of the laboratory by ensuring proper management and maintenance of equipment, supplies, software, and documentation for the lab.
  • Provides technical assistance and supervision for the daily operation of the laboratory including instrument testing and component modification.
  • Ensures that standards for compliance, use of equipment, and quality control are met as required by organizational policies.
  • Management of refrigerator, freezer and liquid nitrogen inventory, including assembling templates and managing space allocations including hosting and managing cleanouts.
  • Management of environmental monitoring system, including operation, expansion, calibration, and commissioning.
  • Ensures completion of employee departmental orientation, competency testing, compliance training and other mandatory instruction.
  • Development, implementation and maintenance of area specific SOP’s, work instructions, policies, procedures, inspection forms, log sheets, job plans and schedules.
  • Oversees occurrence reports, investigation of concerns and follow up, problem resolution, record keeping and reporting.
  • Makes recommendations for technical changes and improvements in assigned area and participates with vendors and representatives to maintain equipment services and other contracts.
  • Performs laboratory procedures and other departmental duties as required.
  • Participates in the ongoing monitoring for each testing process to identify errors or potential problems leading to errors and takes effective and preventive corrective actions when indicated.
  • Development of a formal risk management program for laboratory equipment and processes.
  • Acting safety manager and training coordinator in conjunction with EH&S consultant, ensuring all EH&S policies and procedures are implemented and being followed including, chemical hygiene and contamination control procedures, new hire, lab safety and annual refresher training.
  • Coordination and scheduling of all activities and outside vendors or contractors related to installations, moves, preventative maintenance, calibration, repair services and/or inspections for lab equipment, utilities, labs, and building.
  • Attendance and participation in departmental and other scheduled/unscheduled meetings, conference calls, video conferencing etc.
  • Respond to after-hours call-ins for emergencies, and laboratory equipment related issues, temperature control unit issues and other related issues.
  • Position requires daily onsite presence.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • BS in Biology or Chemistry
  • 5 years’ experience in life sciences with 3+ years’ experience managing a biotechnology or biochemistry lab, and 3+ years’ direct management experience.
  • Experience managing biotechnology or biochemistry lab instrumentation and supplies.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with lab safety issues including biohazard, chemical hazard, chemical and supplies inventory management and waste management.
  • Proactive, self-starter with the ability to multitask.
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills, with demonstrated application in incident or deviation investigations. Must be organized, customer focused and can multitask while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Effective team, vendor, and documentation management experience.
  • Ability to write and revise standard operating procedures (SOP’s), work instructions and policies.
  • Strong written and oral communication and collaboration skills, facilitation, organizational and planning skills with a demonstrated ability to organization to all management levels.
  • Ability to build working relationships and effectively partner cross-functionally and at all levels in the organization.
  • Experience with desktop office applications (i.e., MS Office suite), ERP systems, asset management systems, Building Management, and security systems.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds without restrictions.
