Reporting to the Sr Director of Research and closely interacting with our regulatory, clinical development, translational, and process development teams, the Senior Scientist will perform a critical role in executing the pre-clinical and translational strategy for the Company. Key functions will include design, coordination and execution for in vitro monitoring/characterization assays and biological candidate development performed both in-house and with third-party contractors in support of ongoing and planned clinical trials. In addition, the role will interface with our CMC/clinical/translational development teams as they relate to the company wet-lab activities designed to catalyze and support drug candidate development. This role has a high level of complexity requiring wide technical and scientific expertise; involving multiple techniques, projects and interfaces.
Inhalon Biopharma is a rapidly growing startup with a patented breakthrough technology for preventing and treating acute respiratory infections such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), metapneumovirus (MPV) and SARS-CoV-2. The Company recently completed a Seed round and has been awarded funding by the US Army to run a Phase 1/2a study in COVID-19 patients and has multiple NIH/SBIR grants to develop its pipeline of treatments for RSV, MPV, and influenza. Inhalon operates out of Durham, NC and the SF Bay Area.
The Senior Scientist should have excellent communications skills and possess the ability to translate complex science to groups who may not possess a strong scientific background.
Be a team-player who can successfully interface with Development (CMC, Regulatory, Clinical) groups, displaying effective communication skills.
Design and execute complex technical development studies requiring highly organized data collection and management with phase appropriate quality and regulatory oversight.
Established and working operational knowledge for key analytical and selection methods (inhalation, manufacturing and functional assay cell line development, upstream and downstream processing of recombinant proteins, recombinant molecular biology techniques) to support in-house development and characterization of candidate biologics for inhalation.
Hands on transition of new candidates from R&D to Clinical evaluation:
Manufacturing cell line development and analytical characterization
Research cell bank manufacturing, characterization & testing
Cell culture platform evaluation and development
Analytical fit-for-purpose assays and studies associated with inhalation technology and characterization
Develop anti-viral, immunological and mucosal functional assays for key company projects.
Collect and analyze data using quality compliant methods for recording laboratory research and development activities.
Prepare data for technical reports, publications and grants.
Interact with multiple colleagues in a dynamic environment. Be willing to take on new projects outside the ‘normal’ course of business. Be highly motivated.
Meet with collaboration partners to communicate scientific progress.
This position may require domestic travel.
Significant experience (5+ years in corporate/biotech environment) in immunology, virology and inhalation drug delivery with a thorough working knowledge of key assays is strongly preferred. Candidates with corporate or biotech R&D experience is a must. The successful candidate should have hands on laboratory experience in most or all of the following fields: mammalian cell culture (adherent and suspension), molecular biology techniques (PCR, sequencing, restriction mapping), genome analysis, bioanalysis (e.g. ELISA, assays of antiviral function and pulmonary delivery). Working knowledge of mucosal biology is advantageous.
