The Enzyme Engineering Scientist will join our rapidly growing R&D team and spearhead the Enzyme Development Group for the fast-paced, high-throughput development of superior enzymes associated with the company’s de novo-designed carbon conserving metabolic pathways. This role is a career-defining opportunity to gain experience and skills with hiring & managing a small team along with creating and implementing ZymoChem’s protein engineering pipeline with state-of-the-art techniques and tools. The Enzyme Engineering Scientist will also be a critical part of multi-disciplinary collaborations with other ZymoChem groups as well as the company’s external partners to accelerate enzyme engineering efforts and expand the company’s IP portfolio.
Lead multiple enzyme engineering projects in parallel, both internally as well as with ZymoChem collaborators
Develop in vitro and/or in vivo assays for various classes of enzymes
Build out the automation capabilities for high-throughput enzyme production and enzyme screening
Utilize state-of-the-art computational tools to enable desired enzyme engineering outcomes
Establish a data management system to track experimental outputs as well as implement statistical and computational analyses on large data sets
Collaborate with the Strain Engineering, Fermentation, and Analytics Groups toward more in-depth characterization of superior enzyme candidates in the leading production strains
PhD in (Bio)chemistry, Bioengineering, Biophysics, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline working directly on topics related to enzyme characterization or engineering
2+ years of industrial/startup experience working directly on enzyme engineering efforts – particularly with proven results – is strongly preferred
Highly proficient with designing and implementing in vitro and in vivo systems for protein production and enzyme activity assays
Diverse knowledge base of both wet lab and computational tools (e.g., DNA-to-phenotype relationships) for delivering improved enzymes
Experience with molecular modeling and visualization tools such as Rosetta and PyMol, along with scripting tools (e.g., Python, R, MatLab) for analyses of large datasets
Hands-on expertises using automation to accelerate enzyme screening workflows
Scientific rigor toward continuous evaluation of experimental design, noise/variability, reproducibility, and outcomes
