As a result of our strong scientific progress and clinical pipeline, we are seeking an ambitious and experienced pharmacologist with strong translational skills to lead our pharmacology group and translational science.

Position Summary:

In this position, you will work closely with research and development teams to advance Carmot’s discovery and clinical programs. You will be directly responsible for leading the in vivo pharmacology team by designing and overseeing the execution of drug discovery studies using in vivo models of metabolic disease. An important part of this role includes the investigation of compound efficacy and mechanism of action and how these attributes translate to the clinical setting. You should have a deep understanding of metabolic disease models and their translational applicability to type 2 diabetes, obesity and NASH. You must be excellent at multi-tasking and have the courage to push the boundaries and assume a broad array of responsibilities.

Primary responsibilities:

• Lead in-house and outsourced animal model studies for Carmot’s clinical and pre-clinical metabolic disease programs
• Work closely with cell biology and lead discovery teams to design mechanism of action studies to differentiate and characterize lead compounds
• Mentor scientists with varying levels of experience and build a cohesive pharmacology team with the ability to cover a diverse array of metabolic models
• Work with senior management to develop project strategies and portfolio management decisions
• Present research progress and planning in team, company, board and partner settings

Required experience and skills:

• PhD in cell biology, pharmacology or related field with 8+ years of industry experience in in vivo pharmacology
• A passion for hands-on research with the ability to manage day-to-day research projects and provide detailed technical guidance
• Demonstrated ability to manage PhD-level scientists and leading multi-disciplinary project teams
• Experience working with both biologics and small molecules and a clear understanding of appropriate PK/PD considerations for each
• Expertise in one or more of the following disease areas:
• Diabetes and related pathologies such as kidney failure, diabetic wound healing and tissue repair, neuropathy, retinopathy, and cardiovascular/microvascular disease
• Liver disease, in particular NAFLD/NASH
• Metabolic syndrome research: appetite regulation, adipose tissue dysregulation and inflammation
• Strategic thinking with strong intuition and ability to operate efficiently within a resource constrained environment
• Ability to creatively solve challenging problems and rapidly adapt to changing priorities
