Caribou seeks an experienced and highly motivated Operations Associate/Manager to join its team at its research and development facility in Berkeley, CA. The ideal candidate will interact with management and others to manage the facility and laboratory operations. The Operations Associate/Manager must enjoy working in a fast-paced and highly cross-disciplinary environment while collaborating with our team of scientists and researchers.

Responsibilities:
• Maintain a safe and effective working environment in laboratories and office areas for employees and visitors
• Ensure laboratory facilities and equipment are in good working condition, including certifications, inspections, calibrations and repairs
• Coordinate facility repairs and maintenance with property manager
• Manage facility and equipment monitoring systems and respond to alarms/alerts as required
• Ensure earthquake safety program meets current code requirements
• Coordinate the site security system including first response to incidents
• Manage the full cycle purchasing process including order placement (phone, online), receiving, shipping, RMAs, PO changes
• Adhere to company policies and business processes
• Participate in negotiations, RFQs, proposals comparisons and vendor selection
• Build/maintain relationships with vendors to enable smooth operations and issue resolution
• Track inventory levels of general lab supplies for controlled procurement and minimum inventory levels of chemical/reagents, gases and LN2
• Plan production of reagents, media, and other materials for research
• Manage hazardous materials inventory, SDS binder, hazard waste collection, storage and removal, and update inventory on CERS as required
• Coordinate biomaterial shipments, work directly with couriers and brokers to coordinate shipments
• Manage weekly biohazardous waste removal with appropriate records
• Ensure facility and laboratory operations meet OSHA, NFPA and local safety and environmental regulatory compliance including proper chemical and waste storage
• Develop and maintain facility, operations and safety SOPs and comply with records retention policies
• Ensure safety training programs are up-to-date and provide training to all employees as required
• Develop and administer life safety programs related to evacuations and incident response
• Assist scientific staff as requested
• Support site response 24/7

Candidate must possess:
• Bachelor’s degree in the life sciences or AA/AS with equivalent experience
• Minimum 3 years of experience in procurement and lab operations
• Experience in a Biotech or Life Science company
• General knowledge of lab safety requirements, chemical handling and hazards, DOT shipping requirements, ergonomics, and biohazards
• Able to deliver and track required safety training
• Basic mechanical skills for small projects (install keyboard trays, assemble furniture/shelves, etc.)
• Able to operate/maintain/troubleshoot mechanical equipment including glasswashers and autoclaves to sterilize equipment
• Proficient using Microsoft Office
• Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects simultaneously
• Works well independently in a team environment
• Highly organized and detail-oriented
• Able to lift up to 30 pounds

Preferred:
• Experience managing direct reports
• Proficient in developing and delivering safety training including Chemical Hygiene and Blood-borne pathogens training
• Experience with Point Purchasing and CERS
• Able to manage facility upgrade projects including interface with local building or regulatory agencies
• Experience purchasing and installing laboratory automation equipment
• Familiar with sterile environments and able to train others on aseptic techniques
