Research Associate – Protein Purification

Bolt Threads is looking for a highly motivated and productive Research Associate to support the development of novel recombinant silk protein materials. You have a strong fundamental understanding of protein chemistry, proven protein purification skills, and practical experience in the developing and troubleshooting protocols. You will be working in the lab with molecular biologists to produce of novel structural proteins for characterization and evaluation.

The Position

Design and execute bench-scale protein purification experiments.
Conduct assays to characterize proteins and impurities, and help analyze the resulting data.
Develop, troubleshoot, and modify protocols.
Take ownership of projects and take initiative to try new approaches.
Support routine research group operations.
Work safely at all times.

Requirements

B.Sc/M.Sc in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field with at least 1 year of relevant laboratory experience.
Mastery of standard protein purification techniques, including cell homogenization, protein solubilization and stabilization, and separations utilizing precipitation, centrifugation, and chromatographic techniques.
Mastery of standard protein assays including SDS-PAGE, Bradford, and uv/vis spectroscopic techniques.
Proven ability to work with laboratory equipment and instrumentation and produce reproducible and accurate results.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities and excellent written and verbal communications
Proficient with common computer programs such as Excel and Word, or equivalents.
Experience with other techniques for characterizing proteins and impurities, such as mass spectrometry, HPLC, or fluorescence a plus.
Experience with structural proteins or working with protein denaturants a plus.
Ability to lift and manipulate bottles of liquid up to 4L, and work standing up 60% of your workday
