Bioinformatics Scientist at Fluxion Biosciences

Fluxion is currently looking for a full-time Bioinformatics Scientist to join our team.  The successful candidate will play a key role to the development of our Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) analysis software and assays.  Experience working with and developing pipelines for the analysis of sequencing data is required.  Hands-on sequencing experience using at least one of the leading NGS platforms (Ion Torrent, Illumina) is highly desired. The bioinformatician will work closely with our software developers and software development experience is highly desired.  The successful applicant will bring significant experience in NGS data analysis and reporting, and knowledge of the key steps required for somatic mutation detection including: DNA amplification, purification, library preparation, and operating sequencing instrumentation.



  • Design and implement bioinformatics analysis pipelines for processing next-generation sequencing data. Document code and use repository best practices.

  • Integrate computational methods/pipelines with AWS computing resources

  • Work closely with customers and partners on collaborative projects, including defining the scope of the collaboration, researching the scientific topics and implementing the appropriate bioinformatics solutions that meet project timelines

  • Design sequencing assays from nucleic acid extraction to data analysis and interpretation

  • Develop new statistical techniques to  improve low-frequency variant detection

  • Prepare customer reports and internal company presentations of assay results

  • Present findings at internal meetings, scientific conferences, and customer sites; participate in the write-up and publication of scientific findings


  • MS or PhD in bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, genomics, or a related field

  • Outstanding programming skills in Perl, R, and Unix

  • Experience with common bioinformatic tools use such as BWA, Bowtie, GATK, etc.

  • Experience developing, testing and debugging the bioinformatics pipeline from variant calling to variant filtering and annotation

  • Excellent track record of analyzing next generation sequencing data and performing network analysis

  • Demonstrated knowledge of statistics, statistical genetics, bioinformatics concepts, methods and tools. Familiarity with genomic data tools, repositories, and databases

  • Strong attention to detail and solid analytical skills

  • Ability to work hard and independently while contributing to the team effort and adhering to deadlines

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with track record of productive collaborations

  • A minimum 2-3 years experience with NGS data analysis

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience managing Amazon Web Server resources

  • Programming skills in Python, Java, or C.

  • Previously performed NGS analysis in a CAP/CLIA regulated environment

  • Experience at an NGS platform or service company is preferred, but academic experience will also be considered

  • Experience with somatic mutation detection using targeted amplicon panels

  • Versed in the analysis of  cancer profiling data in public the domain such as TCGA

  • Experience with molecular biology analytical instrumentation (multiplexed PCR, digital PCR, etc.)

  • Previous hands-on experience with wet lab processes (e.g. cell handling, sample extraction, QC, library/template prep)
